Fantasy for Solo Violin

The Violin Fantasy was composed in the Fall of 2002 for violinist Daniel Vega-Albela. Earlier in the year Daniel's quartet, La Catrina, had performed my String Quartet, after which Daniel asked me for a work for solo violin. Conceived as the first movement of a sonata (the second movement of which is yet unfinished), the Fantasy makes use of some of the extended techniques available to a virtuosic performer like Daniel Vega-Albela, but in spirit is a very lyrical work, not really a show-piece. Listen especially for the contrapuntal lines near the beginning, and the melody in harmonics in the middle section.

The file below is from Vega-Albela's third performance of the work, in April of 2003 at WMU's annual New Sounds Festival.
